TK/Kindergarten: The district's Kindergarten teachers met to review the new schedule for Back to School Night. Teachers discussed which parts were successful and determined areas that need to be altered. Kindergarten teachers also reviewed the homework policy and acknowledged that students are not required to complete the assigned work until First Grade. Finally, the Kindergarten teachers reviewed and made changes to the Common Core State Standards aligned English Language Arts and Math assessments. All of the assessments were updated in ESGI and all Kindergarten teachers input current student data.
First Grade: The first grade team met with 1st grade teachers from PCR and PCY to debrief the new Fountas & Pinnell assessment and data entry schedule. They also set up their classes in the ESGI assessment system, looked at assessments and discussed implementation. They ended by discussing the possibility of updating the DWA for the 2017-18 school year.
Second Grade: The 2nd grade team at LCE met and went over District Writing Assessment. They calibrated their students’ writing and looked at the rubric. Monica Ratliff, LCE’s English Language Development Teacher, joined the teachers to help them to look at the English Language Learners’ writing and gave her input. The teachers also reviewed their Fountas and Pinnell Assessments, discussing students’ instructional and independent levels.
Third Grade: The third grade teachers from all three sites met to discuss common assessments and the Everyday Math curriculum. The teachers discussed pacing and decided which assessments to administer. Lastly, the teachers looked into the games and progress monitoring features of Everyday Math.
Fourth Grade: The LCE 4th grade teachers collaborated on addressing the new NGSS standards to the current textbook. Since the text starts out with Life Science, they worked on developing a Life Science Unit delving into the external and internal animal structures. They researched science websites to create slides on an upcoming collaborative research project which will include animal comparisons and phenomena. Other areas were discussed such as Time Capsule field trip and the setting up of Science Notebooks.
Fifth Grade: The 5th grade teachers were absent on this day.
Sixth Grade: The LCE 6th grade teachers discussed Math assessments and student progress. They also created a listening lesson for Language Arts and discussed 6th grade events like the Pali Mountain field trip organization, the planning of the Norton Simon field trip, and the planning of their end of year Mountasia field trip.
ELD: The ELD teachers from all three elementary schools met with the Chief Director of Assessment, Research, Consolidated Programs and CALPADs to begin planning the ELAC meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 29th at 6:30 and the IPAD Distribution meeting scheduled for October 6th at 6:30. They also discussed how to support teachers with the ELD Standards Progress Report now due every trimester and the possibility of having the Progress Report on Illuminate. They discussed the monthly ELD newsletter.
Resource Specialist: Mrs. Stassel met with various teachers in several grade levels to discuss curriculum and students. Topics ranged from: Everyday Math, testing, parents, scheduling, and progress so far this year. She also met with Special Education paraprofessionals to discuss the students and how to best meet their needs.
Technology Specialists: PCR and LCE specialists met and discussed how the computer/media lab was going to be used by classes this year. They reviewed lessons for the Sphero robot, LCE shared how the robots are used with with students. They discussed the 3D printers and the need for additional printers to handle the print load.
Library Specialists: PCY, PCR, and LCE specialists brought and discussed new books. They talked about which books to display and read in the Fall. They made plans for their visit to the Once Upon a Time bookstore in October. Specialists also shared books that talked about the brain and how we best learn.
