LCHS will welcome three new faces to the Math Department when school begins this August, while also welcoming back a former veteran LCHS 7/8 math teacher.
The teachers new to LCHS are Mrs. India Dastic, Mrs. Megan Dever and Mr. Jonathan Saavedra, while veteran teacher Morgan Savage returns to LCHS 7/8 after a one year absence. Both Mrs. Dastic and Mrs. Dever were introduced at the Governing Board meeting on Tuesday, May 9th. Mr. Saavedra is currently teaching high school Math in Maryland and was not available to attend the Governing Board meeting.
Mrs. India Dastic
Mrs. Dastic earned her B/S. degree in Mathematics from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a M.S. in Teaching Mathematics from Loyola Marymount University (LMU), comes to LCHS from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. She has seven years of teaching experience and has also taught at the prestigious Archer School for Girls in Brentwood and Campbell Hall in North Hollywood. Mrs. Dastic has previously taught Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics and Pre-Calculus, and can also teach AP Calculus.
The past two years Mrs. Dastic has been involved in a research project at LMU called Project SET. Through this work she has been involved with developing teacher support materials for the Common Core Statistics standards.
Mrs. Dastic is expected to teach LC Math 1 Advanced and LC Math 2 Advanced this school year.
Interesting fact about Mrs. Dastic: She has taught at a high school charter school, two all-girls schools and an elementary school.
Mrs. Megan Dever
Mrs. Dever earned her B.A. degree in Middle Childhood Education from Miami University (Ohio) and an M.A. in Instructional Leadership from Mt. St. Mary’s University will be teaching eighth grade Math at LCHS 7/8. An Ohio native, Mrs. Dever holds teaching credentials in both Ohio and California, and has five years of teaching experience. She comes to LCHS from St. Marianne’s School in Pico Rivera where she taught fifth through eighth grade advanced Math for the past five years.
Mrs. Dever is expected to teach Common Core Math 8 and Math 8 Advanced.
Interesting fact about Mrs. Dever: As a high school student at Toledo (OH) Central Catholic High School she earned a 5 on the AP Calculus exam.
Mr. Jonathan Saavedra
Mr. Saavedra earned his B.S. degree in Mathematics from San Diego State University and his teaching credential from Azusa Pacific University. He taught at Redlands High School, Yucaipa High School and Mesa View Middle School. Four years ago, he and his fiancée (now wife) moved to the East Coast and Mr. Saavedra began teaching at Gaithersburg High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. Mr. Saavedra has taught Algebra, Geometry, Honors Geometry and Algebra II in his seven years as a classroom teacher. Mr. Saavedra also served as the Montgomery County Public School District’s high school advanced mathematics teacher for their Homework Hotline.
Mr. Saavedra is expected to teach LC Math 1 Advanced and LC Math 3.
Interesting fact about Mr. Saavedra: He’s coached high school basketball and badminton, and has also served as a class advisor.
Mr. Morgan Savage
Mr. Savage continued to serve as an assistant coach for the LCHS girls’ varsity basketball team this past year, as he began another career in the world of finance. This will be his 12th year at LCHS 7/8 and he’ll be teaching four periods of seventh grade Math.
Interesting fact about Mr. Savage: Mr. Savage began his career teaching in a private school.
As we welcome these four teachers, we also say good-bye to Ms. Annie DiFiore, Mr. Andy Kang and Mrs. Charisse Bontemps. We thank you for your time, effort, and dedication to the students of LCHS!!
